YOUR PEOPLE. NEW TEAMS.
RANDOM TEAM GENERATOR
Create random teams with captains and exclusions for classes, clubs or game nights. Choose team leaders, keep selected people apart, and save your setup for next time.
01 / YOUR ROSTER
2–80 people. Use unique names (Alex A / Alex B for namesakes). Up to 50 characters per name.
Add names, then update the options.
02 / TEAM RULES
Optional. Captains go to separate teams. Select up to one captain per team; fewer captains are allowed.
KEEP PEOPLE APART
Each pair must be in different teams. Maximum 100 pairs. Team sizes differ by at most one person.
Ready when you are.
SAVE FOR NEXT TIME
Save the roster, team count, captains and exclusions on this device. Team results are not saved. Up to 10 setups; saving the same name replaces it.
Nothing is saved until you choose Save Setup.
RANDOM TEAM GENERATOR WITH CAPTAINS
Already have team leaders? Select their names before the draw. Each chosen captain goes to a different team, and the remaining people are assigned around them while keeping team sizes balanced.
Example: For 12 players and 3 teams, select Alex, Jamie and Morgan as captains. Each team gets one captain and three other players. You can also choose fewer captains than teams; the remaining teams will have no designated captain.
How to set it up: Paste one name per line, choose the number of teams, and click Update Name Options. Tick the captain names under Team Rules, then click Generate Teams. Choose no more captains than teams.
RANDOM TEAM GENERATOR WITH EXCLUSIONS
Keep particular people on different teams by adding an exclusion pair. Both people stay in the roster; the rule only prevents them from being assigned to the same team.
Example: For 8 people split into 2 teams, add Morgan and Sam as an exclusion. Each team gets four people, and Morgan and Sam are placed on opposite teams. Captains and exclusion pairs can be used in the same draw.
How to set it up: Click Update Name Options after editing the roster. Choose two different names under Keep People Apart and click Add Exclusion. Repeat for other pairs, then generate the teams. Saved setups include these rules so you can reuse them next session.
Does an exclusion remove someone from the draw?
No. Every person is assigned exactly once. To leave someone out entirely, remove their name from the roster and remove any exclusion pairs that refer to them.
Can I use captains and exclusions together?
Yes. Captains are kept on separate teams, and every exclusion pair must also be separated. For example, select Alex and Jamie as captains and keep Morgan apart from Sam. The Try Sample button loads this exact setup with eight people.
Why can three exclusion pairs make a draw impossible?
With two teams, A apart from B, A apart from C, and B apart from C cannot all be satisfied: three mutually separated people require at least three teams. Remove a pair or increase the team count. The generator never drops a rule to force a result.
Will reshuffling keep my rules?
Yes. Clicking Generate Teams again keeps the current captains and exclusions. A new result is not guaranteed when only a few arrangements satisfy the rules. Save Setup to retain the roster and rules after closing this page.
HOW TEAM ASSIGNMENT WORKS
Enter names, set the team count, and add any rules. Generate Teams uses browser randomness to vary assignments while keeping team sizes balanced. Generate again for a new draw; the same result can occur, especially with strict rules.
Is every possible team arrangement equally likely?
No. Captains and exclusions guide a randomized search for a valid assignment. This balances headcount, not skill, age or ability. It is intended for everyday team activities.
What if my rules cannot be satisfied?
Some combinations cannot fit into balanced teams. If the search proves that, the tool tells you. Complex rules may reach the search limit instead; in that case try again or relax a rule. Exclusions are never silently ignored.
Where are names saved?
Saved setups stay in this browser's local storage, without an account or server upload. Use Delete next to a saved setup to remove it. Clear removes the current inputs and results, not saved setups.
